Ed Mitchell was in a group selected for astronaut training in April 1966. He served as a member of the astronaut support crew for Apollo 9 and as backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 10.  He became the 6th Man to walk on the moon during Apollo 14 in 1971 with Alan Shepard.  He has also authored a book entitled "The Way of the Explorer".
