Wally Schirra is the only a Astronaut to fly on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Missions.  He became the 5th American in Space in October 1962 and later Commanded Gemini 7 and Apollo 7 which was the first flight of the Apollo Program.  He has also authored an excellent book entitled "Schirra's Space".
