Scott Carpenter became the fourth American in space during his flight on Aurora 7 in May 1962, this was to be his only space flight.  Three years later he explored the mysteries of the deep in the Navy's Man-in-the-Sea Program in Sealab II spending thirty days living and working on the ocean floor.  He has also authored a novel entitled "The Steel Albatross".
