John Glenn became an instant hero in February 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the earth aboard Friendship 7.  He later became a US Senator and flew in space again almost four decades later aboard STS-95 in 1998 to become the oldest human to go into space.  He has also authored an excellent book entitled "John Glenn: A Memoir"
